Traction, cushion, upper materials, fit, lockdown, support – the list goes on –but a topic that is scarcely talked about are the special features and technology that goes into NBA athlete Player Edition shoes, or PEs. We now take a look at LeBron James’ seventeenth signature shoe, the Nike LeBron 17, that features substantial outriggers, something that is not featured on the retail versions consumers receive.
For a brief recap, there was some controversy on social media when the Nike Zoom Freak 1 first released due to the shoes not featuring any form of arch or torsional support. A midfoot arch plate made of TPU is generally a standard in basketball shoes nowadays, and the Zoom Freak 1s do not come with that feature. Now, in December 2019, we have a look at the bottom sole of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Nike Zoom Freak 1 PE, which looks to feature a Zoom Air bag at the forefoot – something that is not featured on the retail pairs we can purchase.
Something we’ve also seen is Giannis’ PEs feature improved upper materials, such as micro mesh. It’s very clear that in the league, players have more features in their shoes than the retail pairs do. Let us know if you think we should be receiving the additional features that Giannis’ Zoom Freak 1 PEs feature, or if the retail versions are just fine for consumers. Are they worth $120?
